Hondo

May 27, 2009

Hondo, still in semi-stunned disbelief about Mon day night's Rays collapse in Cleveland, paid the price last night when Roy Harvey Oswalt was unable to improve to 24-1 against the Reds. Apparently, having Mr. Aitch on his back was too much for RHO to carry.

Today, with the earnings down to 390 raschis, 10 units on the Pirates to Duke out the Cubs. Tonight, Burnett seems like a solid choice, since without the threat of a Yankee walkoff win he'll be able to focus on pitching, not pie-making. Ten units.

(961) HOUSTON ASTROS
(962) CINCINNATI REDS
Take "Over"

The Houston pitching staff has taken a beating the last week, getting smacked around by the Rangers and the Reds in the opener, an 8-5 defeat. The staff gave up 13 hits and 5 walks, having to go with 4 pitchers. This is a hitter-friendly park and two struggling hurlers take the hill in Felipe Paulino (6.90 ERA) and Bronson Arroyo (5.79 ERA). Look for an offensive show, play the Astros/Reds over the total.

<TABLE cellSpacing=3 cellPadding=5 width=654 bgColor=#ffffff border=0><TBODY><TR><TD vAlign=top height=72>DELAWARE PARK Race #2 at 1:40 PM Eastern
Top pick: #6 (EGO'S APPEAL) - Sharp win at this price going wire-to-wire on May 9th, his first start in 2 1/2 months and first for trainer Scott Lake. Trainer has a pair entered and they'll race as separate interests. The horse to beat.
2nd pick: #2 (Jimmy's Boy) - Veteran also comes off a powerful win following a 7 week rest from the Cody Autry barn. Speed/stalker is a contender and the likely winner if the top pick scratches.
3rd pick: #1 (Signals In The Wind) - The 2nd of the Lake runners finished an even 3rd here on May 13th. Draws the rail and is an exacta use if he goes.
4th pick: #3 (I'll Blow Your Mind) - Good barn (Julio Cartegana) has him back for the 2nd time and this veteran sprinter has solid form at Charles Town on view. Contender if he brings it with him.

WEDNESDAY'S PLAYS
25 Dime Nuggets

10 Dime Nuggets-Lakers Under

Nuggets at Lakers

NUGGETS - Through the first two rounds of the playoffs the Los Angeles Lakers cruised at home, going a very strong 6-1 SU, outscoring their opponents, on average, 107-93.

In the Western Conference finals, in the first two games against the Nuggets, the Lakers have already lost a game outright and have actually been outscored by Denver 104.5-104 in Los Angeles.

Simply put, the Nuggets are doing something the Utah Jazz or Houston Rockets couldn’t do.

Tonight, Denver is catching about 6 points and will once again keep it close enough and flirt with an outright victory.

Through the first four games of this series the Nuggets are 3-1 ATS and have covered in each of the first two games in Los Angeles.

The Nuggets so far have proven to be a bad matchup for the Lakers, who have grown too reliant on Kobe Bryant, who is averaging 36.7 points per game in this series and is accounting for a little more than a third of the Lakers’ offensive production through the first four games (on average 36 of 103 points).

Denver is allowing Bryant to do whatever he pleases and is taking out the rest of his supporting cast and doing an excellent job of it.

Tonight, the Nuggets will continue their successes against the Lakers and flirt with another outright win and improve to 14-1 ATS in the postseason.

Nuggets-Lakers Total

UNDER - Seventy-eight points. That’s what the Nuggets and Lakers combined for in the fourth quarter of Game 4 on Monday. Seventy-eight.

The Under looked like it was going to deliver through the first three quarters of the game, but that 78-point effort pushed the teams over the total.

Tonight, there will be no 78-point quarter and the teams will come in Under the total for the fourth time in this series.

The Total for tonight is set at around 209.5 points, depending on where you’re playing this. And these two will fall short. So far in this series these two have totaled, on average, 209.5 points. But the aberration that was Game 4 aside, these two totaled, on average, 205.6 points per through the first three games of this series.

Going back a little further the Under has come in 9 of the last 11 meetings between these two and is on a 4-1 run in Los Angeles.

Tonight, the Under will come through again as the defenses dictate this game. Take the Under on this one.

Take Under 9.5 between the Boston Redsox @ Minnesota Twins. The Redsox lost 2-5 yesterday and look to bounce-back today behind the back of Dice-K. Dice pitched relatively well in his last start but he came up with the Loss. He only gave up 5 hits, but over the course of 5 innings he ended up giving up 4 runs. The Redsox went on to lose that game 3-5 at home. He looks to bounce-back today against the Twins as he is matched up with Slowey who is pitching very well of late and overall this season. He has put together 3 straight quality starts and 5 of 7 quality starts to his credit. Heck, he is 6-1 with a 4.23era. Considering this is game 3 and in some ways a rubber game as these two teams have split the series so far, I look for a competitive pitching contest as Dice looks to be on the bounce-back and Slowey has been pitching sound thus far. The Under is 4-1-1 in Boston's last 6 road games and the Under is 8-3 in Slowey's last 11 starts when the total is in between the 8 to 10.5 range.
